Finger-licking gooood is the only way to describe Issue 14 of VolksAmerica.
Our cover car was supposed to be a simple run-around for mom. But once Chris Schneider got his hands on this 1974 Volkswagen Thing he couldn’t stop himself from giving it the full Dubonair treatment – it’s now so low it’s almost at sea-level! A ragged shell of a car was repaired, chopped, raised and miraculously transformed into the stunning Scarlet Lady.
Another insanely creative piece of moving mechanical art is the orange and silver Volksrod, or SpiderRod as we’ve christened it, owned by Jorge Santos from New Jersey. What started out as a 1970 VW Beetle became the Volksrod vision he’d held dear for many years. Yes, there’s some weird stuff going on here, but it all seems to work: Packard headlamps, Camaro seats, buggy cannons and much more all come together to produce a jaw-dropping machine that makes you grin from ear to ear and want to jump inside. You have to read the full feature several times to really appreciate the work done to this vehicle and the talent on display.
Inspired by a Hot Wheels model the pink and white Super Beetle is a roller-coaster ride of the trials and tribulations of having a classic car restored. To save money, owner Penny Williams, did much of the prep work herself and really had to wrestle this car back to life. Her story will make you cry, then laugh, then cry all over again, and you will finish full of admiration for this determined lady who was intent on making her dream come true.
A chance chat about a Karmann Ghia for sale on the web to a friend by Jason Kersten, led to the discovery of a 1971 model holed up in a barn since 1991 – yes honestly, a true barn-find. Rebuilt and repainted in a luscious Carrera Minerva Blue Metallic paint with under-hood stickers by Jason’s son, this lowered Ghia has awesome street appeal… and oh those curves…you can’t help but want to run your hands all over them.
And another very special feature car is Scooter, owned by Eric Wheaton from North Las Vegas. His elegant and beautiful, 1966 Horizon Blue Beetle is adorned with an amazing array of rare vintage accessories. Just a few of them include a Blaupunkt interior thermometer, Drager fuel gauge, Blaupunkt radio with sublime ivory music note knobs and Kienzle clock. In this feature the pictures really do paint a thousand words as there are so many cool items on this car to spot. Another feature to scrutinize closely and keep for reference for future swapmeet finds!
Plus we report from the Fast 4 Cartel Summer Slam, you can spot yourself or a friend at VWs on Auto Alley in Oklahoma or at Bug-a-Paluza hosted by the Scenic City VolksFolks in Tennessee, there’s floorpan resto and engine build tech, Classic VW Bugs shop visit plus lots more great stuff to lose yourself in.
