We’re on the cusp of summer as Issue 13 is released and variety is the name of the game with some very special vehicles featured in this issue. What better way to celebrate fun in the sun than with a Meyers Manx dune buggy? The Manxster 2+2 model showcased is a special anniversary edition marking the 50th anniversary of the Meyers Manx and was built by owner Jim Russell. Bruce Meyers coined the phrase “More smiles per mile” and it captures the spirit of a dune buggy perfectly.
And you’ll be grinning from ear to ear when you read about the crazy Volksrod crafted with skill, imagination (we’re talking full on Mad Max style here) and, what we call, artistic engineering by Russell Stinnett from Alabama. Fitted with a turbo-charged 2.3L engine it is an awesome piece of machinery! Then there’s the accident damaged 1957 ragtop Oval Beetle that becomes a tasteful powerhouse, boasting an old-school performance 2275cc motor. And for something completely different check out the Type 147 Kleinlieferwagen – “The What?” I hear you yell. More commonly known as the Fridolin this quirky, friendly-faced little delivery vehicle, designed specifically for the Swiss and German postal services, is a rare find in the USA and always turns heads when it’s out for a drive.
And we feel incredibly privileged to share an important piece of military history with you in Joe Cecil’s 1952 11E Beetle that he brought back to America after buying it and using it as his daily driver in Germany during his military service there. As caretaker of this car for the last 18 years, Joe tells how he almost sold it at a VW show, thinking it was just another old Bug. At the time he had no idea how remarkable it was until a expert from overseas spotted it at the show and explained to him it’s significance. Up to that point in time only four had been known to survive world-wide; Joe it seemed owned a fifth.

Just got this issue late this afternoon, just in time for me to relax over the weekend and start reading. I love the full color cover to cover, especially the reds of that dune buggy. I have a lot to do on my daughters 72′ beetle that I inherited, but someday I see a bus in my future. That is if I can fit my gut between the seat and the steering wheel!
Now I’m just waiting for my issue of VolksMania to arrive.
